Qualifying conditions in Maryland
A medical marijuana certification may be issued if the qualifying patient has a debilitating or chronic disease that causes:
- anorexia,
- cachexia/wasting syndrome,
- glaucoma,
- post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD),
- seizures,
- severe or chronic pain,
- severe nausea,
- severe or persistent muscle spasms,
- or another chronic medical condition that is severe and for which other treatments have been ineffective.
How to be a medical cannabis caregiver in Maryland
Some patients choose to have – or are required to have – a designated caregiver.
Patient caregivers can purchase and administer cannabis for a registered patient. A caregiver may serve no more than five registered patients at any given time. A patient may designate one caregiver (though minor patients may have up to four caregivers).
The process of registering is fairly straightforward. The patient and caregiver must register with the MCA. After both parties have registered, the patient will log into their account and designate the caregiver.
Caregivers must be:
- at least 21 years old,
- the parent or legal guardian of the patient if the patient is a minor,
- registered with and approved by the Maryland Cannabis Administration,
- in possession of their ID card from the Commission at all times while possessing cannabis on behalf of the patient.
Caregivers cannot:
- use the patient’s cannabis,
- purchase more than the maximum amount allowed for the patient,
- serve more than five patients at a time.

How to register for a medical cannabis card in Maryland
First, you’ll need to register in Maryland’s online MMJ registration database. You’ll need to enter all of the requested information and pay the state registration fee of $25. You’ll receive a PIN that your practitioner will need to issue your written certification.
Next, follow the instructions on NuggMD to fill out your application. Make sure you enter all of your information accurately to avoid possible delays in your processing. Once you’ve been certified, a refund for services will no longer be available. You have the right to see the practitioner of your choice for your medical marijuana evaluation, so long as the practitioner is a Maryland-certified physician, physician assistant, podiatrist, dentist, nurse practitioner, or nurse-midwife who has registered with the state as a Certifying Healthcare Provider.
